Streetly Mens Veterans Finish 5th in Europe

Streetly Mens Veterans over 60 team, representing Great Britain in the European Club Championships for the third year, finished in a very creditable 5thth place.

This year’s championships were held at Rakovnic, some 30 miles west of Prague, in the Czech Republic.

The Streetly team, captained by Mick Webb, was Will Rogers, Geoff Cliff, Derek Bradshaw and Roy Halfpenny. In the opening match Streetly narrowly lost an epic encounter with the seeded Italian team from Parma 3 -2, with the match being decided in the final set of the last rubber. Streetly battled on, overcoming injuries, to defeat teams from Switzerland and Norway to finish 5th overall.

The team and are on course again to qualify for the 2010 European Championships, having reached the semi final stage of the British inter club competition, where they will now play Surbiton from Surrey

Streetly have also reached the quarter finals of the O55 Mens Championships and play Winchester next week.

Streetly’s success continued last weekend in the Warwickshire Restricted championships where the club reached a record 5 finals. In the Mens Doubles Noel Dunne and John Cross lost in a close match to Beechwood from Coventry.

In the Walton Cup, Mens O45 Doubles, Geoff Cliff and Will Rogers won their 6th title after defeating Martin Todd and Dave Bradbury from Leamington 7-6, 6-4. Rogers and Cliff failed to complete a double, when in the Mens Vintage Doubles (O55) they lost to the experienced Solihull Arden pair of Chris Barker and Tony Ainsworth. In the ladies doubles Mandy Rowe and Jo Jennings lost a close final to Knowle & Dorridge, while in the Stone Cup mixed doubles final youngsters Josh Sherrington and Hayley Mc Laughlin lost 6-4, 7-6 to local rivals Four Oaks.
