Streetly the reigning champions, in the Mens 60 Doubles won the title for the fourth consecutive year by beating Westcliff 4-1. In the first round singles matches Roy Halfpenny beat John Harris 6-2, 6-4 while Derek Bradshaw lost in a third set champions tie break to the experienced Westcliff number 1 and Great Britain International Colin Minter. In the first round doubles Geoff Cliff and Mick Webb beat Geoff Burditt and Bob Hammond 6-2, 6-4 to give Streetly a 2-1 lead. In the final round of doubles both Streetly pairs Will Rogers and Roy Halfpenny and Geoff Cliff and Mick Webb won in straight sets to give Streetly a convincing 4-1 victory.
In the 55 Mens Doubles, after beating Grantham, East Gloucester, Winchester and then St Georges (Surrey) in the semi final, Streetly went on to play reigning champions Leicester, in the final.
The final was a hard fought match. In the first round singles Derek Bradshaw lost 6-1,6-4 to British number 1 Richard Tutt and Roy Halfpenny after winning the first set against world singles semi finalist Keith Bland lost in a third set tie break. Geoff Cliff and Mick Webb kept the final alive by winning the first round doubles 15-13 in the third set tie break after saving three match points. Leicester with former world doubles champions’ Tutt and Bland proved just too strong in the second round doubles beating Cliff and Webb 6-2,6-4 .Will Rogers and Derek Bradshaw also lost a tight match to Leicester’s Colin Ayling and Dennis Archer giving Leicester a 4-1 victory.
This has been another great year for Streetly in reaching two National Veterans finals. Streetly will now be able to represent Great Britain in both the Mens 55 and 60 European Club championships to be held next summer.
Streetly offers tennis for players of all ages and abilities with excellent facilities and coaching throughout the winter. The club has 10 artificial grass courts, 8 of which are floodlit and an attractive clubhouse and bar. |
