In the final against a strong Aylesbury team Streetly
won a close final 3 – 2. Playing a new format of 2 singles
and 3 doubles Streetly got off to a flying start when Derek Bradshaw
beat fellow England international Norman Church 6-2, 6-4 and Andrew
Eley and Geoff Cliff beat the Aylesbury doubles pair 6-2, 7-6 to
put Streetly 2 nil up before Jim Goodman lost the second singles
to Mike francis. This scoreline meant Streetly had to play the final
2 doubles matches to decide the final. Aylesbury levelled the match
when Geoff Cliff and Andrew Eley lost 6-4, 6-3 to Church and Francis
but Derek Bradshaw and Ken Buswell clinched the title for Streetly
by winning the final doubles 6-4, 6-2.
Streetly will now go on to represent Great Britain
in the 2008 European O60’s Club championships.
Streetly also reached the semi finals of the Senior
Mixed and Mens O55 Doubles competitions but playing away lost to
West Hants and Westcliff in 2 very close matches. In the Mixed the
match score was 2-2, but Streetly lost by a set. In the Mens O55’s
with the match poised at 2 rubbers each and 1 set all in the final
rubber Dave Lloyd and Will Rogers, after saving 6 match points,
lost the final set tie break, for Westcliff to go through 3-2.
This has been another great year for Streetly in
the National Veterans competitions to add to the clubs league and
junior successes.
