Streetly Win National Club Veterans Title

Streetly maintained their National club championship winning record when they retained the Mens O60 doubles title at the Next Generation indoor centre at Dudley last weekend.

In the final against a strong Aylesbury team Streetly won a close final 3 – 2. Playing a new format of 2 singles and 3 doubles Streetly got off to a flying start when Derek Bradshaw beat fellow England international Norman Church 6-2, 6-4 and Andrew Eley and Geoff Cliff beat the Aylesbury doubles pair 6-2, 7-6 to put Streetly 2 nil up before Jim Goodman lost the second singles to Mike francis. This scoreline meant Streetly had to play the final 2 doubles matches to decide the final. Aylesbury levelled the match when Geoff Cliff and Andrew Eley lost 6-4, 6-3 to Church and Francis but Derek Bradshaw and Ken Buswell clinched the title for Streetly by winning the final doubles 6-4, 6-2.

Streetly will now go on to represent Great Britain in the 2008 European O60’s Club championships.

Streetly also reached the semi finals of the Senior Mixed and Mens O55 Doubles competitions but playing away lost to West Hants and Westcliff in 2 very close matches. In the Mixed the match score was 2-2, but Streetly lost by a set. In the Mens O55’s with the match poised at 2 rubbers each and 1 set all in the final rubber Dave Lloyd and Will Rogers, after saving 6 match points, lost the final set tie break, for Westcliff to go through 3-2.

This has been another great year for Streetly in the National Veterans competitions to add to the clubs league and junior successes.
